postGame: Wingnuts 8 - Canaries 1

May 27, 2008 11:10 pm

The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries by a final of 8-1 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Tuesday evening. Gustavo Mata pitched seven strong innings, allowing one run to earn the win. David Gates broke the game open with a bases-loaded two-run single amidst a six-run third inning. Felipe Del Rosario hit a two-run homerun in the sixth, his first of the year. Michael Thompson walked in the third and has now reached base in 18 consecutive games.

…this was arguably the best all around game played by wichita this year. great starting pitching, timely hitting, and flawless defense. mata took total control after wichita went up 6-1 in the third, retiring 12 of the final 13 to face him…

…del rosario creamed his homerun, and also held onto the ball for the final out in the top of the third after taking a hit at home plate from dh will smith. wichita took advantage of a pair of infield hits and a pair of bloops in their six-run third…

…crisp, crisp win…

postGame: Saltdogs 4 - Wingnuts 3 (12 inn.)

May 25, 2008 12:26 pm

Wichita fell to Lincoln last night by a final of 4-3 in 12 innings at Haymarket Park. Saltdogs’ catcher Shawn McGill hit an opposite field drive that fell just inside the right field line and allowed second baseman Corey Harrington to score the winning run from third base. Newcomer Alejandro Martinez took the loss for Wichita.

The two teams are back into a virtual tie for second place and are each 0.5 games back of St. Paul.

…this game featured some great relief pitching from both sides. in fact, wichita did not allow a base hit from the fifth through the 10th innings. the wingnuts tied the game in the top of the fifth, scoring two runs, and after that only two runners for either side got past second base…

…in the end, it came down to leaving men on base. wichita stranded 11 runners and outhit the saltdogs 12-5. the night before the wingnuts were outhit 8-5, but won the game 6-3. ironic…

…the wingnuts’ had two chances to break the 3-3 tie that come to mind. in the seventh inning, heath keel leadoff with a single, stole second, and advanced to third on a felipe del rosario groundball. however, both derek schermerhorn and kevin hooper made outs and keel was stranded on third base. in the top of the 12th, the wingnuts got a leadoff hit from kevin hooper, his third of the night. blake gailen laid down a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled by pitcher johnny thompson, putting runners on first and second and no one out. chris colton then tried to lay down another bunt, but this time thompson made a nice play to his left and narrowly forced out hooper at third. brenan herrera and michael thompson were then retired to end the inning. other than that, neither team really had a prime scoring opportunity after the fifth…

…amad stephens has been flat out dominant since joining wichita. he threw another two and two thirds scoreless innings last night, retiring all eight batters to face him. stephens has not allowed a base hit in seven innings with the wingnuts…

…kevin hooper stole two more bases and had three base hits. he just looks locked in at the plate right now. he is currently 3-8 with three walks, four runs, and five steals in the first two games of the series…

…more hard luck for justin young, who allowed two earned runs over 6.2 innings, but took his third no-decision of the year. young has pitched well in all four of his starts this season…

…for the second straight sunday, the wingnuts will now play in a rubber match. leonard landeros goes for the wingnuts, while jarrett gardner pitches for the saltdogs…

…wichita played a lot of “beauchamp ball” last night, scoring five of their six runs without using a base hit. the wingnuts also stole six bases, and took advnatage of five satldogs errors. brad davis was solid on the mound, allowing three runs, one earned, in six innings. the bullpen was dominant, as it has been over the last week, with gustavo mata, amad stephens, and byron embry each throwing a scoreless inning…

…let’s go for the series win tonight!…
